What does INDEPENDENCE mean to you?‏

cbc calendar

This time of year sees a few countries celebrating their independence. We’ve just had the 4th July for the US, 10th July for The Bahamas and will be celebrating for Jamaica on the 6th August. There is no doubt each country commemorates this time in different ways; barbeques, fireworks, parties, picnics and so on, but how many stop to actually think ‘What does this INDEPENDENCE mean?’

Does this independence mean that I can wear what I want? Choose what I want to do with my day? Eat what I want? Where I go on holiday? Yes! Independence means all of that but so much more.

This independence means freedom of speech, freedom to choose your profession, where you live, who you share your life with, who you vote for. This independence means choices. You get to choose your life and considering we live in a world where so many people don’t have these liberties we are the fortunate ones.

Independence may mean something different to each of you but it’s important to take time and be thankful for the freedoms that you have and the chance to share these freedoms with your children and your children’s children which means that you also have a responsibility to use your voice wisely so that it benefits yourself and those around you.

“Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed – else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die.” – Dwight D. Eisenhower

Happy Independence Day wherever you may be in the world!

Yes that’s right it’s Graduation Season!

low res You Graduated girl

So it’s that time of year when Graduation Season is upon us. Whether its university graduates or soon to be graduates who have spent 3-4 long years working hard in pursuit of their end goal, or school children who have reached the end of their primary or secondary education, summer time is a season for celebration and embarking upon a new era!

So often in life we focus on the next chapter, our ambitions and what we hope to achieve next, but it is important to take stock, reflect on accomplishments and take a moment to pat ourselves and our loved ones on their back and just say well done!

Graduation Day

This can be an emotional day for some, full of celebration, memories and talk of the future, a time for well taking lots of funny pics, hugs, kisses and thanking those who were influential in our journey. Queuing up for your cap and gown and taking your more professional portraits are all exciting but the most exciting part is walking up those steps and across that stage to collect your award, that’s the moment when you realize that all of your hard work has paid off!

The inspirational commencement speech tops off the day, then it’s time for food and drinks with family and friends.Check out the below links for some inspirational and humorous Commencement speeches below:

Address by Arianna Huffington (Huffington Post) at Smith College 2013: http://youtu.be/UJ25qEHgcM4
